Can we change our habit while travelling, being at an anonymous place, having no place for constant stay and constant faces around?
For sure I never dreamed my life to be this and I never lived like this yet.
Being an architect, I started my journey with the purpose to explore the local architecture of North-East India but being human being we observe people and try to mimic them in our life. I stayed at five states of India-Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya and Sikkim and started slowly I washed away all my resistance. ‘You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of success is found in your daily routine’ says John C Maxwell.
In cities every day we wake up, get ready and rush towards offices, this was a habit I was following for one year. Slowly soul died but while moving new places learned new things, something which was basic and vigorous.
Waking early morning
With the sun rising early in the sky, gentle tweets of birds and dogs barking at strangers walkers, I started waking up early daily. “It is well to be up before daybreak, but such habits contribute to health, wealth, and wisdom.”,says Aristotle. Well I was not seeking wealth, but obviously health and wisdom. It was not easy being a backpacker but who have fun while doing easy things.
Morning workout
It was easy to say ‘I don’t have time’ and have been feeding this to myself the last two years but when you move to new place u need to adopt some habits while living with other. This happened due to
Every day we easily find excuses not to find time for our health and I have been doing it for many years but while working with people in Kohima, I adopted it without excuse. Sometimes things become easy when we find people struggling with the same things, so I started doing it daily with local people and now it has become my habit of working out at least 20 min daily.
Reading daily
“The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read.” ― Mark Twain
I have never been a good reader, until its a book of my interest. So I was easy to find reasons not to read daily and lying to the that I am busy. It was hard to adopt in daily schedule, still, I am struggling with it and trying every day.
Living in present
Overthinking was my habit and it grows crazy when I have nothing to do. I was astound seeing someone sitting for hours while doing meditation. I imagined myself sitting like him but I failed. Many questions crossed my way and asked him all. He answered all calmly and said you won’t know its importance until you start doing it. I started with 30 seconds and now I can sit for 30 minutes. I am still trying to mimic him daily and sit for hours doing nothing.
Reviving my old habit
Throughout our childhood, we grow many habits like sketching, dancing, indoor/outdoor games but we forget while growing up. So do I, there were many moments which reminded me of my old habits, and my resistance was stronger than my will.
While travelling I meet many new people and learned some new philosophy for life. I saw young girls reviving their local art and craft. New people seeking to learn new things. It is easy to learn new things than adopting an old habit. But motivation will always help you.
Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going. So find it and be consistent.
